Happy Birthday New Mexico

It seems kind of profound or scary to me that when I was born the state of New Mexico was only 34 years old.  Now it is 100 years old and it is celebrating its birthday with little fanfare.  Unlike the 250th anniversary of the City of Albuquerque's birthday back in the 1950's.  Everyone went all out for that one and all the men in the city were growing beards to commemorate it.  Even my dad Fermin did so.

There was a real sense of community excitement in the city on that anniversary.  There is decidedly little notice on our state's behalf because the political leadership so far has done little to take note of it.  Maybe it is just the way things are now.  I kind of miss the hoopla.  I did put up our New Mexico State Flag in the front  yard today.

Maybe the governor would be excited if it was the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, you know, considering her family history of illegal immigration from Mexico, or the 100th anniversary of the border patrol.

Actually it's not that funny. A lot of the racism aimed at Mexicans in this country goes back to that revolution, a socialist revolution right on our southern border. The powers that be here did not like that, thus began the campaign to demonize them. People no longer know why, but the racism remains.

But yes, that does seem strange in a way. You have been around for roughly half the state's history. People in your family who you knew, I'm sure, were around before statehood. That's not long ago.

I don't think my math was very accurate in that comment. According to that math I'm roughly 100. I may be, too. It would explain my math.

It reminds me of a comedian's routine I heard. He was annoyed because Lenscrafter advertises they will make your eyeglasses in about an hour.

He went there, got glasses, and they told him it would be $100. He handed them $95 and said "Here's about a hundred dollars."
