Signs

Having run a lot of campaigns I can say one of my favorite ways to spend money is on yard signs.  In my subdivision off Rio Grande Blvd near Matthew St. it appears that Tim Kelly outnumbers every other candidate about 10 to one in yard signs that actually sit in front of a home, instead of on a street somewhere.  It tells me that Kellers underfunded public campaign is using its money wisely on grass roots.  Those people who actually vote.  The only other presence in this neighborhood is a lone Colon sign.  That is it.  None for Lewis or the other candidates.

The upcoming danger for Keller is the runoff.  That is when an opponent who has unlimited funding options will have some advantages.  Who ever runs against Keller, probably Colon, will uncork that money from irresponsible land developers.  Colon has been strangely quiet in the scurrilous attacks on Keller by CEO Jeff Garrett at the Santolina development.  Profit at any cost.  (Please don't forget the County Commissioners who sided with Santolina, but that will be a topic for a future blog.)

Gus’ signs outnumber Keller signs in the UNM-Nob Hill area. Every election this area has the highest voter turnout. There is going to be a polling place at UNM on Election Day and Gus was very active on campus outside of both parties. Maybe that’s why someone stole his signs in my neighborhood on Saturday night because he is a threat to Keller and Colon.

Gus a threat...No. Colon is the only one that Keller is worried about. Journal endorsement will get all the old folks in the NE Hts. to vote for Colon. Balderas will deliver hispanics. Keller needs all the unions to get out and vote when he gets to final 2. Brian "Profit at All Cost Pelosi" Colon will be the next Mayor of Burque. Sorry Progressive Dems!

Two things, Jim. I think it's unfair to blame Colon for staying above the fray vis-a-vis the scurrilous Keller attacks. Brian is running against Tim, and getting his hands in the dirt can only hurt Brian. Many of his supporters (like me) have condemned the BS. I like Tim, and I hate smear tactics. I just like Brian better.

Second, yard signs don't vote. Supporters love them, but they cost valuable resources that could be spent elsewhere. Campaigns with discipline try to minimize spending on yard signs. I'm not saying it's a bad move for Tim, given his grassroots-heavy approach. You have to give supporters some of what they want, but in the end, yard signs are just political chum, a bunch of fish guts which the sharks go crazy over.

From my count of campaign signs in our neighborhood "Free Roof Inspections" will be our next Mayor by a six to one against Colon 1 and Keller 1.
