Proof

The Albuquerque Journal ran a story this morning about crime in Baltimore which had extensive quotes in it from the city's African American Mayor.  She was called on to defend her leadership and that of the police department.

This morning there was another story on New Mexico's and Albuquerque's disastrous ratings in the area of public safety.  And of course the Journal didn't get an interview with either the Mayor or the Governor on our community's downward spiral into third world status.  The comments came from the Mayor's chief of staff and from a functionary in the Governor's Office.

So one can surmise that if an elected official is to be quoted in the Journal they must meet the qualifications as follows.

  1. Be an African American
  2. Be a Democrat
  3. Live 1800 miles away

You forgot Caitlyn Jenner on the front page! First class reporting of the news.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head. The Albuquerque Urinal is about as quality in its journalism as the Enquirer.

Once again Governor Martinez and Mayor Berry display the "head in the sand" approach to governing we have come to expect from these administrations. Deny, deny and deny then send out the spinners to spin. What does it take to get an honest, human response to the issues plaguing this state? Elections have consequences.

We're in a bad place. No prosperity for the city and state, $23 million in killer cop payouts since 2010 with on the way and coming down the pipeline. And yet the mayor and governor seem to be pretty well liked, based on election results, and media coverage of them is no doubt a large part of the reason.

Are there things we could be doing? Things we could be thinking about? Are there ways to informs and engage the public?

A couple things that come to my mind:

There are some web based media alternatives, nmpoliticalreport.com and others, and as the mews media continues to evolve owing to new technologies, changing lifestyles and demographics, we might think of ways to get ahead of that curve. I keep hearing that most young people connect to the internet with their cellphones, and get their news in one way or another from the internet, i.e. on social media and etc. Everywhere you go you see people walking around staring at their cellphones. How do you get your message to be what they're staring at?

Has anyone heard from the new New Mexico Democratic Party chairwoman? Heard anything from her about strategies, notices of meetings to talk about strategy, any sign of efforts to get the party's message out, ways to elect more Democrats? On the party's web site her current "weekly update" is brief, three paragraphs of fluff that look like what somebody who already had two full time jobs when she was elected chairwoman might dash off while she was on her way from one full time job to the other. Does the party have enough money to hire someone to do these kinds of things full time? Are they paying someone for that now?

The issues are being raised here on Jim's web site. Where are our elected Democrats, and others, who might be able to make a difference, i.e. the rest of us? What are our elected officials and we doing between sessions of the legislature? Getting together and strategizing, or letting other forces move forward and letting them create a set of conditions such that when the next session comes along nothing can be accomplished to improve the lives of New Mexicans?

There are a lot of Democrats in New Mexico. How do you get them organized and mobilized? But there are also a lot of other people out there, too, who could be mobilized. How do you reach and inform them?

Yes, I have heard from the new NM Democratic Party Chairperson, Deb Haaland. She came to speak and listen to our Drinking Liberally group in Cedar Crest. She made an appeal for us to sign up for a monthly recurring contribution and I did for the first time. I signed up to get regular news updates from the NM Dem Party. Here's week 2 update:

"...I’d like to thank our Federal Delegation, State Legislative leaders, and State-wide elected officials for coming forward in a time of peril for DPNM, and helping us right the boat and begin to move our Party forward! Their assistance, both financially and otherwise, has proved immeasurable in this time of transition, and I sincerely thank them for their service to our Party.
Our monthly sustained donor list continues to grow, and we are so grateful to have such wide support from all across New Mexico. To join this group of passionate Democrats, please click here https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/page/week2 to begin giving $5, $10, $25, or $50 per month today! While we’re talking about money, this past week, we switched compliance firms which will save DPNM $20,000 annually! Every penny counts!
We also set a date of September 12 for our next State Central Committee meeting, and we’ve begun the process of securing a venue and lodging for our members who will be in attendance, and our CD1Vice Chair Pamelya Herndon reached out to the DNC to let them know that New Mexico would be a great place to hold a Presidential Debate!
We are also thrilled to announce, thanks to our passionate Doña Ana County Democrats, that we have a fundraiser scheduled at the Pickett Law Firm in Las Cruces on Tuesday May 19th. Our entire Executive Team will be in attendance so we’ll have a chance to discuss next steps as we near election season. To RSVP, please click here. https://services.myngp.com/ngponlineservices/event.aspx?Y=FrZ0S4jyDpXEOQ5fMJNVa+XU3iOJgkcb9CMibVBdKJxiggsS60tg3g%3d%3d&b=1209365

Additionally, Vice Chairman Juan Sanchez and I have continued to travel to various county and labor meetings to discuss ideas and thoughts regarding the future of our State Party and our county parties. I had the privilege to address the Central Labor Council (CLC) and the New Mexico House Democratic Caucus, and I’m excited to speak with the EmergeNM women this Thursday morning at Joe with Meaux coffee! If you’d like to schedule any of our executive team for a meeting or a phone call, please call Alonso at 505-830-3650.
I am also pleased to announce that our search for an Executive Director is underway, as is our selection process for the varied committee appointments! It is a blessing to be such a big part of moving our Party forward, and I am thankful for the opportunity. If there is anything DPNM can do for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or my staff. I am very proud of our staff – Jon, Rob, Alonso, and Scott, who have all pitched in and worked on a very smooth transition. We’re all here for you!
In your service,

Chairwoman Debra Haaland"

I signed up on her Facebook page, too. In May I attended my first Ward meeting after being invited.

With Deb Haaland, there's a change in NM Democratic sstate politics and all you need to do is get involved.

There is only one way to deal witht the Journal. Don't subscribe to it, read it, or advertise in it. Get your friends to do the same. In time, they will eventually have to take a more moderate and open stand. They only support the elected officials who allow them to run their offices. The Journal is one of the big problems we have in Albuquerque. They are not honest in their reporting or agenda. Even their reporters hate the paper. They have no where else to go. Each year it gets worse. It will continue until we refuse to accept the crap they put out. I am impressed with ABQ Free Press.
