Retirement Comes for the Archbishop

Bernalillo County taxpayers will take a hit in the pocketbook now that the Archdiocese of Santa Fe has plunked down a half million dollars or more for the retirement home for the retiring Archbishop Sheehan. That property has been taken off the tax rolls and Sheehan gets a free home for life.  Taxpayers will take up the slack.

Don't forget that the Catholic Church moved all of its properties into trusts that could not be taken as compensation for victims of pedophile priests.  Also, one can only wonder what that half million dollars could have been used for in the way of helping poor people.

Maybe we can get a new Archbishop that will emulate the new Pope.  Let us hope so.

Sounds like your a bitter former Catholic.

Not bitter at all. Just awakened. I don't think Christ would have retired into an expensive home at the expense of the poor.

The churches, all of them, and the property they own cost New Mexico taxpayers millions every year. They make non believers pay for the church's rightful share of tax dollars.

Make them pay their share is what I say.

Wait a minute, didn't Jesus say "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and render unto God what is God's" Sounds to me like he was not looking for a tax exemption. Come to think of it, regarding the immigration fiasco, he also said "suffer the little children to come unto me". These so-called religious folks better go back and study their teachings more closely!

Freedom From Religion Foundation has a federal lawsuit against this practice.

Awakened from what? Archbishop is not Christ. The guy did a great job cleaning up the mess left him by his predecessors. He deserves a nice place to live out his years. The Church can sell it when he dies or let the next retired bishop live there.
It gets old hearing all the former Catholics bash the church when the official Catholic church teaching don't jive with their moral or lack of moral compass.

He should pay taxes like the rest of us. and for sure he is not Christ.

What about the rest of retired priests that have served ? What living arrangements are they afforded? The system seems to be a bit hierarchical! :-)

You constantly bash the church, its priests and hierarchy, but it always come across bashing the Catholic faith. I respect that you are an atheist who is a former Catholic, but show some respect for the Catholic faith and those that follow it. You always come across as saying people are fools for being part of the Church, bur it is their choice. You have a bad habit of never distinguishing the Catholic faith from the church and they are not one and the same. Your a lot more credible when you stick with politics.

The Catholic church is like any other big bureaucracy. It gets corrupted by control freaks and dogma lovers. Baca seems to not be afraid of calling it for what it is. A giant scam, like any other religion. Most of the problems we encounter in modern society are rooted in religious fantasy. We just have to live with it, but that doesn't mean we have to keep our mouths shut about it.

Baca should stick to politics. I truly feel sorry for Atheists and others of the opinion that religion is just a scam. Thank God the founders of this great country had a faith and a belief in God.

they had a faith and belief in God perhaps, but they had a real fear of religion. Read some history besides the fiction in the bible.

Actually I don't read the bible much and can't say I am the most religious person in the world. I just admire people like Mother Teresa and others who try to emulate Jesus, serve others, and be humble. Try it, you might like it.
