Fallback

Corrupt pols who get caught always seem to have a fallback position, or should I say fall down on to the knees position.  Disgraced republican Secretary of State Diana Duran said she fell down on her knees to ask god to relieve her of her gambling addiction.  I am pretty sure she did that to gain sympathy from our god fearing constituencies in NM.  She doesn't want any jail time after pleading guilty to violating campaign laws, the very ones she is supposed to enforce.  After all, how can she spend her pension money if she is in jail?

I am not sure it makes any sense to spend significant amounts of money on keeping her in prison for her crime.   But I think 90 days in the cooler is required just to show other pols that there is a price to pay for corruption.  I don't think justice is served by giving her only probation.  As I recall all of our democratic office holders who were found guilty of crimes were in prison for a lenghty time, as they should have been.

Democratic office holders who were found guilty of crimes were in prison for a good time period but were also ordered to make significant restitution. If I recall Manny Aragon got not only 5 years in federal prison but has to make $1.5 million in restitution and the Feds forced him to sell land holding and his home and it even got to the point he had to turn over personal items having value. If Duran is allowed to keep her pension, perhaps the Judge should order PERA to direct a portion of it to pay restitution at least. To imprison a woman in her sixties who is raising her 3 grandchildren will cost the State about $35,000 a year and the grand kids will no doubt just may become wards of the state. Perhaps the Judge should require Duran to testify before the NM Legislature regarding what she did and the need for true ethics reform and what needs to be enacted to prevent others from dong what she has done. Testifying before the NM legislature could be considered a form of political flogging absent the blood and physical pain and plenty of tears for her public humiliation or is that going too far?

you mean she did this while raising three grand children? Now I really think she needs a little jail time. Where were they when she was lounging in the casinos?

Duran's lawyer claims Duran is raising 3 grand children. Do the Indian Casino's offer some sort of day care? When the Downs at Albuquerque went after their 25 year multi million dollar lease, one of the lobbyists actually told the State Fair Commissioners in a public meeting that they wanted the Casino to be "family friendly" and were thinking about putting in some sort of a children s play area at the new casino. Seriously. It was pointed out it would probably be illegal seeing as minors cannot be on casino premises. I probably answered my own question regarding the Indian casinos.

I think her good friend Governor Martinez will pardon her to conceal other damaging crimes.

She won't serve one day because as another poster stated Hector has no balls. Hector is no better than Uncle Bruce's boy. All talk and no action. What has he done since taking over as AG? Maybe he is waiting till right before he runs for Gov. to indite the proverbial "ham sandwich".
