Heinrich on the Keystone Pipeline

I would recommend everyone watch this Senate Floor speech by Senator Martin Heinrich today.  It is 16 minutes long and incredibly informative.  If  you ever had any doubts about stopping the Keystone Pipeline, this should clear them away.

Heinrich has really improved his speaking capabilities.

I know your a huge promoter of Martin, and I listened to his presentation, but frankly he is becoming just another policy wonk and the presentation lacked any sense of outrage. Speaking to an empty Senate Chamber should be easy and he should have been talking to an interested audience. Representative Ben Ray Lujan appeared on Chris Mathews Hard Ball after the State of the Union, and that was something to be proud of the way he advocated Democratic principles with passion. Martin has alot more work to be done and emulating Jeff Bingaman is not going to cut it.

ahhh...the old form over substance argument. Ben Ray is nice to have around....but I haven't seen much from him other than putting himself on facebook in numerous award giving ceremonies. Heinrich actually know his stuff and gets things done. His speaking abilities have improved greatly, but that is not enough for many in the social media era, is it?

Ben Lujan was on TV is his role as the newly appointed by Nancy Pelosi chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, where his function besides the main one of fundraising is to be an attractive, nonthreatening Latino who's a blank slate they can put out there to keep Latinos voting Democratic and hopefully not make any uncomfortable economic or social demands on the status quo, which Lujan never does himself as far as I can tell.

Speaking of demands on the status quo, it's great that Martin Heinrich is a strong environmental advocate, and advocates for an open internet and against domestic spying. For these he deserves credit and our admiration, but he needs to start being a strong advocate for American workers.

At times during that speech he seemed to be channeling Bill Clinton, who did more to cement Neoliberalism -- Reaganomics -- as our national economic policy than anyone.

Green energy jobs are nice but that kind of approach to job creation, like the high tech jobs approach in general, is limited. Most jobs in any economy are still going to be traditional jobs. What about those workers? Who can hire solar panel installers when they can barely keep up with the gas bill because living standards for the majority of Americans are going downhill?

Heinrich makes the case for why alternative energy jobs are needed, but not for how they can be supported, by putting more money in consumers pockets. We should demand he be doing both, and pointing out that he's kind of wasting his time and ours if he doesn't.

Both Martin and Ben Ray will do nothing and get absolutely nothing accomplished for New Mexico now that they are BOTH in the minority party. Four years out from his re-election bid, I get a fund raising letter from Martin saying it is hared to believe that we are a little over 1,000 days from his next election? Well yes, but try getting something done the next 4 years before you start asking for money for another six. What has Martin really accomplished for New Mexico job wise or in any other area during the last two years? Frankly, Martin needs to advocate more for New Mexico before trying to go with National issues such as the Keystone Pipeline which will not even be going through New Mexico.

Raise funds from corporations, I should add, which is where Democrats get most of their money now, not from unions and our contribution. Wall Street, billionaire hedge fund managers, Wall Street megabanks and corporations.
