My Uncle Jaime

It was my uncle Jaime Baca's 90th birthday today.  Many of  his friends and colleagues from St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Rio Rancho gathered for a luncheon for him at the Chamisa Hills Country Club.  My brother Tom and I posed with him before the event.

Jaime has been a Deacon at the Church for many years and is greatly respected.  You can see it in this birthday cake produced by one of the parishioners.  It was a thing of beauty.

Jaime is a retired Bernalillo Public Schools teacher.  He had many harrowing experiences as a gunner in a B-24 Liberator Bomber in the  5th Air Force in the Pacific during WWII.  He escaped many brushes with death.  He is one of the finest men I have ever known.

It was a bright, sunny and breezy day in Rio Rancho.  A bit to cool for a round of golf but the beautiful Sandias made up for that!

Wait a minute. So while everyone was having dessert you were checking out the golf course?

I'm just kidding. Sorry. Actually that was a very pleasant post. I forget there are other things in life besides work and leaving comments on blogs, like putting on a jacket and enjoying family.

I've been meaning to get a jacket for a long time. Last time I moved I gave everything away. It's a lot easier that way and I highly recommend it. I've done it the last two times. It's very liberating, too. Except now I don't have a jacket.

Speaking of golf though, I was wondering how the knee felt after 18 holes. Isn't there a lot of knee action in golf?

I was wondering because I strained my knee at work night before last. I was pushing on a heavy pallet with my legs and one knee bent backward a little. It was kind of frightening. It's still tender and a little weak, and it made me wonder what exercises you do to strengthen your knee.

I know you don't want to write about yourself all the time but other people might be curious, too, as in, what can you do to preserve your knees? What causes knees to get to where they need replacement? Is that preordained or can taking preventive measures help? I don't really hear people taking about things like that. They just say to exercise.
